This massive cult favourite from director Hideo Nakata tells the story of a cursed video tape, which when watched, kills the viewer within seven days. Add to the mix Samara, the long-haired, pasty faced supernatural killer kid, and you have ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ for the 90s, only more potent. Chilling visuals and a disturbing theme will send shivers down the spine of even the most ardent horror fan. Followed by ‘Ring 2’ (a sequel), ‘Ring 0’ (a prequel). The US market tried to capitalise on the franchise with and two pretty useless remakes starring Naomi Watts; 2004 saw Nakata himself remake his own ‘Ring Two’, a failed attempt to recapture the spirit of the series for an English-speaking audience. |
