I am trying to track down a movie (or show) which aired on PBS (in USA) in the very late 80's/very early 90's. I only managed to catch a commercial for it at the time. I saw it only once. It had a thouroughly creepy tone, and aired very late at night.
It appeared to take place in English farm country. The narrator said something about strange happenings, and myths/legends. I only recall a handful of visuals. A boy on a train (I think). A fairly distant scarecrow in a field, which after a moment moved its legs. And, most memorably, a nondescript looking man who suddenly curled back his lips to reveal frightening, doglike teeth and jaws (I saw this at approximately age 10, and it was absolutely terrifying. It looked totally real, and went on for some time).
I can't recall the name, but the narrator kept using a word that (at the time, at least) I didn't know. The way he used it, it sounded more like the name for a type of phenomena than a place name, but it could conceivably have been either.
Does anyone else remember this? Did anyone see it?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
